Absolutely Not! If you own a boat, no matter what the size vessel you operate, you got to have a vhf on board. It could save your life! I spend most of my days inshore or on the lakes so cell phones generally do work, but sometimes on the lakes near mountains, they will not, or deep in the backcountry marshes, you might not get a cell phone signal at all. I always carry one, even if I am on another person’s boat. It’s the captain in me, I guess. If you don’t have a vhf and depend on your cell phone for communication on the water. Do yourself a favor, get a VHF today!
